Signs of postpartum psychosis

I have been to that dark place where it feels like you are not in control. Your brain has betrayed you and you role as a mother starts to morph into something else. Motherhood the Real Deal’s post entitled Mother’s who kill: the real story behind mothers who kill children struck a chord with me regarding the stereotypes of mothers who commit infanticide. It is a scary place to be and not one that people choose. It is also very frightening for partners who may not know what is going on in a psychotic episode or prolonged depression. They really believe that they are saving their children and families by killing their babies.

Some signs to look out for in recent postpartum mothers include:

  • paranoia
  • intrusive thoughts about self and baby
  • weird comments like ‘it will all be better soon’ and ‘I can fix this’
  • out of character emotions and behaviours such as hyperactivity or irritability
  • hallucinations
  • abuse of medications

  1. This is such an important post. Postpartum psychosis is a terrifying thing for anyone to encounter, including our partners. I’m sorry you experienced it, and I hope that you never do again.
